Vattalmulaku chammanthi

Spicy chutney not only excites our taste buds but also the sweet memories of hot lunch packed in banana leaf, to school. The delicious aroma of rice, chutney, pickle, and mezhukkupuratti (vegetables fried in coconut oil) wafting from the banana leaf packet would fill the mouth with water. Here is a traditional recipe of roasted dried chilli chutney.

8 dried chillies

1/4 cup shallots

1 tsp tamarind soaked in water

2 tsp coconut oil

Salt as required

Heat oil in a pan

Fry the dried chillies

In a blender, add fried dry chillies, soaked tamarind, and salt as required

Crush gently

Add shallots and crush again

Serve the ground mixture in a bowl

Add coconut oil as required

Mix well

This chutney tastes best with dosa, idly or rice.
