Here's how to make a sadya-style cabbage thoran


Cabbage thoran or stir fry is one of the most popular dishes in the Kerala cuisine. It is a constant item in the traditional sadya (feast) platter served during weddings or festivals. Here is how you could prepare delicious cabbage thoran just like the way it is prepared for the sadya.


300 gms cabbage

10 shallots

Small piece ginger

2 green chilies

2 bunches curry leaves

½ cup grated coconut

1 tsp salt

½ tsp turmeric powder

2 tbsp coconut oil

¾ tsp mustard seeds

¾ tsp urad dal

2 dried chilies


Finely chop the cabbage

Into it add crushed shallots, ginger and green chilies

Now add the curry leaves, grated coconut, turmeric powder and salt as required

Mix everything well using your fingers

Heat coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds

Add the urad dal, dried chilies and curry leaves. Roast them

Into this add the cabbage €“ coconut mixture

Cook this for 7 €“ 10 minutes on medium flame without the lid

Stir often until the cabbage is cooked well.
