When P.V. Sindhu landed at the Hyderabad airport after the World Badminton Championship in 2013, with the historic bronze medal in hand, her parents and an unprecedented number of admirers were present to celebrate the homecoming. But what thronged the mind of this young badminton champion was Hyderabadi biryani!
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu falls for two things—biryani and chocolates. She's every bit a Hyderabadi, when she declares that she's an out-and-out non-vegetarian and loves mutton biryani the best. But then, there's also the badminton, which essentially got the maestro, Pullela Gopichand, also her coach, to put an embargo on her eating either biryani or chocolate.
For the Rio Olympics, Sindhu was under the supervision of the hawk-eyed Gopichand, who did not let her even think of her favorite foods. He had appointed a weight trainer and a physical fitness expert for Sindhu. So concerned was Gopichand about his student's health that he did not even let her drink water from outside.
It's evident how all the duo's efforts have paid off with Sindhu creating history at the Olympics by being the first ever Indian woman to win a silver medal in any realm of sport. And, how do we celebrate? With a nostalgic plate of mutton biryani of course!
