Madras has a birthday too! An oft-disputed birthday though, since it came into being when East India Company purchased the village of Chennapattanam or Madrasapattanam in 1639. It was on August 22, (or as some argue, July 22) of the year that the deal was made and a part of land was transacted by the East India Company.
Madras started to go down the memory lane since 2004 and christened the day 'Madras Day'. Now, even as eyebrows are raised at this date that is practically a reminder of our colonial history, the US Consulate General, Chennai has put up a video where seemingly, its officials are seen relishing a meal in 'Kasivinayaga mess', a quaint little hotel reminiscent of old Madras.
Not just that, they are seen using their hands to eat the food that has been laid out on a plantain leaf in front of them. Prattling away and making their little ones also try out the out of place practice of eating with their hands, they seem to be quite taken in by the charm of a typical south Indian meal. The little boy quipping “I love the mixing up part” while fastidiously using both hands to mix up the rice with curry, sure adds to the delight!
