Kottayam has its own rich culinary heritage that boasts of a variety of tastes ranging from delicious freshwater fish servings to breads and curries made using creamy coconut milk. The Food Fest 2018, organized by Round Table 121, offers these and more.
Commenced on Wednesday at the Nagampadam Municipal Ground, the five-day fest offers around 300 varieties of food from across the globe ranging from Thalappakatti biriyani, Kerala shappu dishes and Japanese sushi.
The highlight of the event was the stall featuring oyster mushroom dishes. The counter by Tastebloom group offers an array of dishes made of mushroom including cutlets, pickle and even a payasam.
Though Kottayam is the host, the fest is not focused only on central Kerala cuisine; Malabari dishes dominate the event with their meat, mussels, and fish offerings. Noorjahan Malabar Specials, run by Noorjahan M K, was the hot favorite of the Kottayam crowd. Must Try @ NMS: Kallumakkaya/mussels and Irachi pathiri.
If you are a fish-lover, the stall by Hotel Joyees Residency is a must visit. The star of their menu is Kuttanadu koottu, a spicy fish platter that includes marinated and sauteed shrimp, squid rings and chopped fish. The counter also offers a deep roasted chicken dish with a whole chicken wrapped in banana leaves, aluminum foil and clay.
Don't forget to stop by the Abad Sea Sparkle's stall and grab a pack of popcorn shrimp to snack on while roaming around. When you feel stuffed, sip on a spicy masala tea or a Malabari kava from the themed counters of Adaminte Chayakkada team.
Standing out from rest of the lot is the stall by the popular Thollayiram Chira Shappu in Parippu, Kottayam. You can devour the spicy traditional shappu curries and tapioca dishes from this counter along with some delicious freshwater fish servings.
Don't forget to visit the stall by The Magic Whisk team. Snap a selfie while you grab a bite, post it in your Instagram profile tagging @themagicwhisk.shruthi for a chance to win a cake from them, now that's what we call a perfect promotion.
Sum up your trip with some melt-in-your mouth desserts from the stall by Kottayam Ladies' Circle. Ask for the day's special if you are into trying new things. Or else, stick with the fluffy and sweet traditional tender coconut pudding.
