Meatballs with french fries

Belgium is known as the birthplace of French fries, locally known as “pommes frites”. Frites are the national snack of Belgium and an integral part of many of the traditional dishes.

Frites are best served with meat, cooked in thick, spicy sauce. Among the Belgian main course dishes, there is much fanfare for boulet à la liégeoise, Belgian meatballs served with frites and salad. Try out yourself this sauce-rich, spicy dish today and eat the Belgian way!

Ingredients

For meatballs


250 gms ground pork

250 gms ground beef

2 eggs

1 onion, grated

1 bunch parsley, chopped

1 slice of bread, chopped

4 tsp dry bread crumbs

2 tsp pepper powder

Salt as required


For sauce


2 onions, grated

2 tbsp beef broth or water

2 tbsp oil

2 tbsp brown sugar

2 tbsp apple butter

2 cloves

1 bay leaf

1 tsp oregano

1 tsp vinegar

Preparation

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees

Mix together the ingredients for meatballs

Make them into 5 large balls

Cook them for 40 minutes in the oven

For the sauce, heat oil in a pan and saute the onions till they turn light brown

Add the brown sugar to the pan to caramelize onions

Deglaze the pan with vinegar

Pour the broth or water to the pan, add apple butter and cloves

Add salt, pepper and bay leaf, cook on a low flame

Now add the baked meatballs to this sauce and cook for 5 minutes

Garnish with oregano

Serve with French fries and salad
